Ipriflavone Osteoporosis, Osteopenia
Ipriflavone Osteoporosis, Osteopenia. Dispensed as pharmaceutical drug in Japan, Italy and several
other nations, it has not been approved as a drug in all countries. In those countries
where there is no Ipriflavone Osteoporosis pharmaceutical drug,
people buy it as a natural supplement in a food
store.
You can buy this in single doses OR you can buy calcium
supplements with Ipriflavone in them. But before you do, I urge you to read more about it.
Basic information about using Ipriflavone Osteoporosis or Osteopenia
- What is ipriflavone? It
is a synthetic isoflavone that appears to inhibit your osteoclasts in
the performance of bone resorption. (In this it is like a number of pharmaceutical drugs such as the bisphosphonates) It also appears to stimulate
osteoblasts to build more bone. (This is a feature not found in most bisphosphonated.) Most of the research about Ipriflavone
Osteoporosis has been done in Japan and Italy.
- Effectiveness in preventing or reversing bone loss. At
least one scientific study indicated that 600 mg a day may prevent
bone loss and that it may increase bone mass in postmenopausalwomen. Another
study of 474 post menopausal white women with with
normal or Osteopenic bone mineral density concluded that in dose of 500
mg a day, isoflaone had no significant benefit in bone density or on the
number of fractures. There was a negative side effect of lymphocytopeni
(see: below) in a significant number of the women.
- What is the normal dose? 600 mg. Some take 200 mg three times a day; others take 300 mg twice day.
- Are there any side effects? In
a trial where 132 women took ipriflavone over a 3 year period, 29 of
the women developed a significant drop in lymphocytes, which are critical
components on the immune system. It took these women almost 2 years
before they returned to normal lymphocytes counts. Any woman taking this
drug or supplement, should have her lymphcytes measured on a
regular basis by her physician. In at least one study it was shown
that taking this flavone in addition to estrogen, increased the effect of
estrogen in the uterus - thus raising some concern about cancer. It
is advised that anyone with kidney disease consult their health care
provider before using Ipriflavone. A lower dose is recommended in kidney
disease. The only other side effect reported has been mild stomach upset.
- What about drug interactions?
If
you are taking any drug that is metabolized in the liver, such as
Theophylline, tolbutamide, Dilantin (phenytoin), Coumadin (warfarin)
Ipriflavone might change the levels of that drug in your body. If you are on medication, do consult with your health care provider before using it.
As noted above, Ipriflavone might also increase the risk of uterine cancer if you are taking estrogen.
Again: You
should not use this supplement/drug unless under medical supervision if
you are taking any drug that suppresses the immune system eg.
corticosteroids, methotrexate, or cyclosporine
