Osteopenia treatments. It can be scary when you're first diagnosed with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis. An image of a 'broken hip' may flash though your mind. Or maybe you know someone who developed kyphosis, (a back hump) because of small spinal fractures.

Now you will find this web site is a bit different from many of the other sites about Osteoporosis and Osteopenia treatments. Most web sites, even many books, lay out 'one specific' plan for you to follow. And that plan is the same for everyone
That is NOT the approach you will find here. Why? Well, when I began researching Osteoporosis and Osteopenia treatments I found that different treatments seemed to address different causes of bone loss. So it seems to me we need to read through the list of CAUSES of Bone Loss and make note of all that apply to us.
Let me share the experiences that led me to this approach By the time I was diagnosed with bone loss I had already broken my wrist when I put my hand out to save myself from falling. And I had shattered my elbow when I slipped on some 'black ice'. Believe me these experiences motivated me to build better bones!
Like most patients I was prescribed exercise and a bisphosphonate drug (which I eventually stopped because of its side effects). Another prescription drug was offered but my dexa scan was not showing improvement. At that point I did what I always do when faced with health issue. I began reading the research. You see I am a college professor. My whole orientation is to 'read the research'. And because of my job I had access to published research studies and if there was something in an article I did not understand, I could always walk over to the science department and ask a colleague to explain it.
Osteopenia and Osteoporosis are not just the result of increasing age or a lack of 'weight bearing' exercise or not enough calcium. As I researched I found that there are over 70 different causes of bone loss! And among those causes I found several that fit my situation.
With that information in hand, I began to research possible solutions for 'my' causes and made some changes in daily living. Result? My bone density began to improve. After a few years, I was back to normal bone density.
I was excited. I wanted to tell everyone: Find the CAUSES of your bone loss and address these. Individualize your Osteoporosis Osteopenia treatments to fit your particular situation. And yes, that is why I started this web site.
I wanted to list ALL the possible causes of bone loss AND give all the treatments I could find - at least those that had scientific evidence for their effectiveness.
I think that you will not find another site that lists as many
potential treatments for reversing bone loss as this one. There is
information from Western pharmaceutical medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine ,
Ayurveda medicine and several herbal traditions. And every item on
this site includes the scientific studies showing whether it is
effective or not. And if there has been no scientific research done, I tell you that too.
I realize that you want straight forward explanations but if you are going to raise the idea of a particular treatment with your health care provide, s/he will want to know if there is 'scientific evidence' for what you are considering. So, where ever possible, I have included ABSTRACTS of the scientific studies about each treatment. (It should be easy to print out the studies to take with you when you meet your health care provider.)
I am convinced of that. I urge you to go to the Causes page (Use the Navigation bar on the left) and make a list of every cause that applies to you. Then as you read the treatments section, make a list of the Osteoporosis, Osteopenia treatments that fit your situation.
And don't forget to read the pages about improving your balance. Remember most people lose 1% of their balance every year after age 35. (That is why so many older persons fall.) But the GOOD NEWS is that you can regain lost balance by doing the balance exercises for a few minutes each day.
And when you bring your ideas to your physician, do bring the information from the scientific studies and ABSTRACTS. Your physician has been trained to trust research results. This web site gives you both references to studies and copies of the Abstracts themselves. Use may or may not want to read those abstracts. But they can be of real use when talking with your doctor.
Finally I ask you to remember that I am an academic. I care very much about your bone improvement. But I have been trained to be 'objective' when I write. It is just who I am.
Also I have been trained to present the information and allow others to draw their own conclusions. I do not TELL you what to do. I make suggestions. But the decisions are yours - I present the research and encourage YOU to make your own decisions (with your health care provider of course.)
