Safe Strength Training for Osteoporosis Prevention is a dvd created by the author, a personal trainer who specializes in strength training for women over age 50. Ms Hathaway is a retired physical education teacher and a youth sports coach. She also volunteers with the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
What
seems very helpful about the dvd is that the author takes time to
explain what women with potential bone loss should NOT do when strength
training.
Actually the section about safety is a full 40
minutes long so be prepared to spend time 'getting acquainted' with
these ideas before you begin any strength training at all. This guidance
is a particularly helpful feature of the dvd. So many exercise and
weight training programs do not offer such advice and women with bone
loss can sometimes suffer stress fractures while exercising. Susie
Hathaway's dvd is designed to prevent that from happening to you.
The exercise program requires that you have dumbells.
(Leg weights are listed as optional). So be prepared to buy some
additional equipment unless you are using the dvd at a gym which
provides the correct weights.
The actual exercise section of the DVD is 50 minutes and the author notes that it will give you a full body workout. For those of us who are older and/or who have not been exercising regularly for some time, 50 minutes may be a bit much. So, too, those with chronic medical conditions may find the program long.
As always you should check with your health care providers before starting a new exercise program and s/he should be able to give some guidance about starting a 50 minute exercise session that uses weights.
Meantime you might want to take a look at this program.
